Fellows Blog: Day 26

Happy first day of July!! Today was (potentially,, but also maybe not) our last day of training. Our original goal was to train 250 boda boda drivers, and as of this morning we were at 182. We all really wanted to make it to an even 200, but were stuck at 199 for most of the pre-test. Luckily two more people showed up late (but still early enough to do the training) so we got to 201! There were four people that showed up very late (one takes the overall record of 1:30 pm!) that we weren’t able to train, but we took their contact information just in case we end up doing extra training days.

Speaking of timing, today it was explained to us that in Uganda, people refer to the time as actually being six hours ahead of what it is. So, when it’s 1 pm, they all refer to it as being 7 pm, and when it’s 11 pm, they all say it’s 5 am. We were (and still are) pretty confused, but wondered if this was part of the root cause for all our timing issues, but… In other news, we sent Kyrillos and Timothy on a beans and chapati run again, which was much appreciated.

Remember the hand game this is bob, bob says hi ( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mZHGJdHoYho)? Well, Amber never learned how do that when she was a kid, so she spent a solid 10 minutes during the training attempting to relive her childhood.

Spontaneous Kyrillos strikes again, this time having Yasin teach him how to drive a boda, much to the girls’ (re: mostly Haleigh’s) concern. The two of them stood in front of the boda so he couldn’t go anywhere, but knowing Kyrillos thought it would be a good idea to at least make sure this was done safely. Haleigh fixed Kyrillos’ helmet… while Amber subtly pulled the boda boda keys out of the ignition and slipped them into her pocket. Haleigh assumed this was to stop Kyrillos, but five minutes later (and much to her dismay) she found Amber in the driver’s seat learning how it works. Don’t worry, no one ended up driving one… for now. We posed for a couple cute pictures though!

After the restaurant today, Kyrillos wanted more sugarcane. We were intrigued that he wanted more sugar after finishing an entire bottle of Miranda (a type of grape soda that has 34 grams of sugar in it), but we rolled with it. Haleigh and Amber were not in the mood for it but eyed some pineapple at another stand. After checking that it was fresh and watching them cut it in front of us, we thoroughly enjoyed the pineapple and basked in the nutrients from eating fruit. #vitaminc

We then had a short period of rest at home. While Haleigh napped, Amber finalized her plans for next year. While Kyrillos napped, Amber continued to finalize plans for next year, and Haleigh made us a lovely dinner of beans and pringles. Per her mom’s suggestion (shoutout Mrs. Pine!) they were actually pretty good.

We got picked up to go to the cinema, which turned out to be an hour walk away. See a clip from our walk here. We wanted to see the new top gun movie, but they had just sent the disc off elsewhere, so settled on “the unbearable weight of mass talent” featuring Nicholas Cage. It was interesting, to say the least, and was in English! We also got some popcorn :)

At home, we made ramen and finished up the blog in our half asleep state. So, here goes…

Happy first day of July!

We’re so proud of Amber for her fun drawings of Bob :)

Every day Kyrillos is getting closer to buying his own boda boda…

Kyrillos was NOT happy to lose his position as driver to Amber.

The truck of fruit that we got our pineapple from!

Haleigh didn’t burn the beans this time!!

The cinema in Mukono! We were thrilled to see a trailer for the new despicable me/minion movie.
