Nigeria
Number of First Responders: 708
Background
In 2021, LFR teamed up with the Health Emergency Initiative (HEI), Nigeria’s leading nonprofit in first aid training and post-crash response. Soon after, HEI and LFR also joined forces with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), a Nigerian federal agency tasked with national road safety management. In collaboration with these two partners, LFR has trained 30 first responder trainers and 350 lay first responders during a pilot program in the Summer of 2022.
Subsequently in 2023, LFR co-founded the First Responder Coalition of Nigeria and expanded the program by training an additional 358 lay first responders through the Deploying Emergency Bystander Internet Training (DEBIT) trial. Current investigations are evaluating these responders, trained in both in-person and online cohorts, to compare the efficacy of both training modalities for program scaling.
LFR has plans to train over 5,000 first responders with HEI and FRSC in the coming year to supplement limited emergency services in Lagos, a city of over 15 Million. Our efforts will make a significant impact on the ground: according to FRSC, road traffic accidents are the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of trauma-related death in Nigeria.
