Guatemala

Number of First Responders: 450

Background

LFR is launching a lay first responder system to cover 90,000 people by training 450 lay first responders to pilot the LFR model in a middle-income setting as a supplement to limited pre-existing emergency medical services. LFR will measure lay first responders’ impact on mortality reduction using an injury severity scoring system (Kampala Trauma Score) in the prehospital and clinical settings, while investigating the efficacy of lay first responder programs alongside pre-existing, fee-for-service ambulatory systems to dramatically increase trauma victim catchment and response times.
