Fellows Blog: Day 39

“Good morning!“

  • Kyrillos, 13:43

Don’t worry, we didn’t sleep in thaaaat late. We woke up at 7:45am after an interesting night to say the least. Haleigh and Amber’s fear of the bat in their room only increased upon Haleigh’s google search (“What diseases can bats carry?”), so the four of us decided to stay in Kyrillos’ and Devir’s room. Even though the girls said they would be more than happy to share the twin sized bed, Kyrillos and Devir took one for the team. This meant that Haleigh and Amber could sleep in the queen sized bed, which was much appreciated especially given the 80 degree heat that was amplified by the cottages we were staying in.

We enjoyed a relaxing breakfast of omelets, toast, pineapple, watermelon, passionfruit juice, and African coffee before leaving to head back to Mukono. Not going to lie, most of the nine hour drive back was spent napping.

However, we did have a couple pit stops to eat lunch, to meet Devir’s mother, and to

say goodbye to the beloved Nile. For lunch, we had a variety of foods including but not limited to a fajitas and spaghetti bolognese. However, the highlight was definitely the passionfruit crepe we decided to get. Devir’s mother was very kind, and she even asked if Haleigh and Amber were sisters! We also pulled over somewhere to have one last look at the Nile. Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed to take pictures at this undisclosed location in case of potential bomb threats (the military personnel stationed there were keeping a very close eye on us) but the view was gorgeous. We also may or may not have gotten pulled over on the drive home for speeding a little… we did learn that instead of having police in patrol cars roaming around the districts, the traffic cops stand on the side of the road and choose vehicles at random to flag down for a license and registration check.

We finally made it home around 7:30pm. The long drive wasn’t enough of an adventure for Kyrillos though, so he decided to head out and explore town a bit more with Devir. In the meantime, Haleigh and Amber showered, made chicken noodle soup, and dealt with the newfound ants in the kitchen (not exactly in this order!)

Once Kyrillos returned, the three of us worked on our presentation for a last-minute meeting tomorrow with the district health officials until 1:30 am. We learned Kyrillos is incredibly talented at designing slides, so we’ll show some of his work in tomorrow’s blog! Apologies for the short blog, but sitting in the car for 9 hours today was fairly uneventful :)
