Fellows Blog: Day 36

Happy national 7-eleven day, aka national free slurpee day! We hope you all are taking advantage of this holiday and having a drink for us. Amber also would like everyone to know that 7-11’s taquitos are “actually really fire.”

We started out the day pretty late today: we didn’t set an alarm and ended up sleeping in until past 11! Once we got up, we had a lovely brunch of kinder bars (Amber and Kyrillos) and made energy balls (Haleigh).

While Haleigh cleaned up the house, Amber and Kyrillos did a deep dive into Murchison Falls (the National park) to plan our trip. Two and hours later, they had everything booked and ready to go! At this point, Kyrillos decided go to get a haircut.

A haircut turned into a near complete makeover, shopping trip, ATM visit, and airtime purchase. Also, dear reader, you should know by now that just when we think we have a plan, we have to make a new one. Lots of phone calls between Amber and Kyrillos were exchanged during this time. Please see figure 4.

Essentially, we had some issues figuring out who was driving us and whether to opt for the tourist company with an organized tour or more local drivers. We worked it out in the end to have accommodations, transportation, activities, entrance fees and food all included in one cost.

Kyrillos started his journey by going to a salon for a haircut. The barber and Kyrillos greeted one another and exchanged a few remarks. All was going well until the barber started cutting the top with a machine. Respectfully, kyrillos asked the barber to use scissors for the top though there wasn’t much of a choice. The scissors needed sharpening and were too dull to make a cut. At this point, Kyrillos closed his eyes and waited until the end to open and see the final result. After the haircut, Kyrillos was gladdened to see a trained boda boda driver help another after being knocked down by a car. Some errands and tens of phone calls to Amber later, Kyrillos arrived back home.

After just eating energy balls, sour patch watermelon and fruit cups today, we ordered chicken tikka pizza tonight from Eunie’s Kitchen. Amber had the surprisingly good idea of putting salt and vinegar pringles on top of the pizza to add an extra crunch.  She also wanted the chili sauce on her pizza again. Haleigh was reluctant to help, given the events of last time. But Amber was insistent. There was a small hole in the package that got sauce all over Haleigh’s fingers, but this gave her the false impression that she could actually get the sauce out. Or get it out carefully, because she did manage to get it out…. See below for the results.

Kyrillos told us he was “scared to come home”, which briefly worried Haleigh and Amber until he said it was because “I don’t want you to make fun of my haircut”. Haleigh doesn’t think it’s as bad as she expected, but Amber “pleads the fifth” and “it’s just so uneven!” (Don’t worry, she’s just teasing… or so we think).

We had put Kyrillos’ pizza box in a bag on the floor while we ate ours on the table. He was so excited to eat it when he got home, only to find it was covered in ants. The box, the pizza and the floor. Kyrillos tried killing all the ants with his shoe and Haleigh with a paper towel, only for us to open the curtains to find many many more. This time Amber’s bug spray idea actually worked- throwback to her failed attempts to spray the cockroach and spider with bug spray- third time’s the charm!

We then packed for our trip and didn’t go to bed as early as we should have for our 4:30 am wake up time!

Haleigh made four separate energy ball flavors: kinder bars, dried mango, dark chocolate, and m&ms.

Kyrillos “Use a zoomed out version so I don’t look like a first grader” Ayoub before his haircut…

… And Kyrillos “I’m ready for school!” Ayoub after his haircut

We found another gecko in our airbnb! This one is a itsy bitsy teenie weenie thing. Haleigh and Amber discovered him while Kyrillos was out, so we decided to surprise him and name this creature Baby Kiro.

“It almost looks like you’re doing cpr on the chili packet” -Amber

This time PV=nRT was not as successful as last time. Haleigh got chili sauce from the window to the wall (and in her eye, on her hands, on her shirt, on the ceiling, on the carpet, and on the floor). It took a whole bottle of water and 20 minutes for her eyes to stop stinging.

Kyrillos specifically requested that everyone appreciates this nice goat

We have had many more bugs recently… this is one Haleigh found in her clothes today.

These worms that started growing in Haleigh’s retainer case (do not worry she will not be wearing her retainer for the rest of the nights here and has thrown out the case in a zipped plastic bag)

Amber’s new side hustle is being a sour straw dealer
