Fellows Blog: Day 12

“Isaac isn’t dead.”

       - Haleigh, 08:54

We decided to leave the gecko to deal with later and walked to VTCA with Devir for our fun day of packing first aid kits. We really don’t have much to say about it besides the fact that we spent three hours cutting 1 meter strips of gauze and rolling it up. Other people on our team cut 180 pieces of cardboard for our splints. It was a bit of a chaotic room, to say the least. Haleigh, perpetually looking for a way to be more efficient (you know those engineering kids), crafted a handle for the surgical blade she was using the cut the gauze. Unfortunately, she took after Amber and also accidentally cut herself with the (clean) surgical blade. Upon noticing that the gauze kept getting caught in her newly healing wound, Amber also fashioned herself a nice bandage for her ailment out of a scrap piece of gauze.

A couple hand cramps and 250 rolls of gauze later, we went to eat lunch by ourselves for the first time!! The 200 foot walk to Bredo was exhilarating. As you may suspect by now, we ordered our favorite Rolex and specified that the vegetables be cooked inside the egg like an omelette— raw vegetables here could be contaminated bacteria that our immune systems are not used to handling. Unfortunately, they gave us the Rolex with fresh lettuce and tomato inside. We tried calling Devir to help explain our situation, but he did not respond. No worries though, Haleigh to the rescue! She conversed with not only the waiter but also the manager to explain, and soon afterwards we got our Rolexes exactly the way we like them :)

Back to gauze rolling it was, and when we got back from lunch, Devir requested that we play American rap music. Amber was on it right away, and Devir commented how much he liked the songs and bopped around the music. Dr. Hannington also appreciated some Drake, remarking “that is nice.”

We got home and discovered the Sammy’s housemaid had cleaned our airbnb as well, meaning that our gecko friend was nowhere to be found and presumably taken care of. Amber  in particular will miss him dearly; earlier today, she was planning the funeral for his foreseeable death in the eventual future.

After finishing the boda boda recruitment spreadsheet and revising the pre and post tests for the Level I curriculum, Haleigh warmed up leftovers for our dinner in our recently acquired microwave. Eight minutes later, and our food was still just as cold as when we initially took it out the fridge.

Amber has started a nightly tradition of making tea every night. Unfortunately, this tradition was tarnished by the return of our gecko foe, but we decided to ignore the problem for now and ate red velvet cake as our dinner.

Some other shenanigans from today:

-Timothy claimed he was 180 cm tall (5’10”), while Haleigh is 5’7” and substantially taller than him. See below for the results of this debate.

-When Haleigh mentioned she felt like she was doing more physical tasks than mental tasks, Amber convinced her to play Sudoku with her. She enjoyed it much more than the cereal box math activity!

-Devir told Haleigh she couldn’t beat him in a race because she was a girl, but refused to actually participate in a race.

-We found out that both Devir and Timothy think Haleigh is scarier than Amber, but they also think that Amber is better at hiding how scary she really is with her banter. An interesting psychoanalysis indeed…

This was probably not Haleigh’s safest idea, but Amber didn’t stop her so…

Hard at work measuring gauze, rolling gauze, cutting gauze, measuring cardboard, marking cardboard, and cutting cardboard!

Haleigh even had her shoes off for this picture! Immediately after taking it Amber taught Timothy some American slang: the word “cap,” meaning “lie.”

Haleigh’s attempt to kill a spider today vs where the spider actually was. She did eventually get it though! Amber would like to add the only reason she is scared of bugs is because her mom would kill them and proceed to chase her around the house with the dead bug guts (supposedly all in good fun). Thankfully, Haleigh spares her this torture (at least for now).

Guess who’s back on a brand new track (spotted after Amber had mentally prepared a eulogy and Timothy had planned to emcee our gecko funeral)

“Honestly it’s kind of cute” - Amber
